The Jeep CJ7 – more wheelbase, more comfort, more possibilities
In 1976, AMC launched the CJ7 for everyone who found the CJ5 too cramped. The wheelbase grew to 2375 mm, and the door openings became wider and squarer. For the first time, a CJ was available with an automatic transmission and the Quadra-Trac full-time four-wheel drive. The factory also offered a moulded hardtop and steel doors with roll-up windows. The drivetrain changed considerably over the years: up to 1979 the Dana 20 transfer case worked with T150 and T18 gearboxes, and from 1980 the Dana 300 took over alongside the T176/T177, SR4, T4 and T5. Engines ranged from the 2.5-litre four-cylinders by GM and AMC through the 3.8 and 4.2-litre inline sixes to the 5.0-litre V8. Trim levels such as Renegade, Laredo and Golden Eagle turned the CJ7 into a classic, until production ended in 1986 and the Wrangler YJ took over. Anyone restoring one today should therefore know the model year and drivetrain of their CJ7 first.
