T18 4-Speed Borg-Warner Transmission Parts for Jeep CJ7
Bearings, gasket kits and shift components for your four-speed (1976-1979).
Why the T18 in your CJ7 deserves a rebuild.
The T18 is still regarded as the toughest four-speed Jeep ever fitted to a CJ7: a cast-iron case, an extremely low first gear and a design built around torque rather than comfort. That very toughness tempts owners to ignore wear for too long. After decades, oil and heat take their toll on the shaft seals, paper gaskets harden, and the first drip under the vehicle turns into a falling oil level. Once the lubricating film is gone, input shaft bearings and synchronizer hubs run dry – audible as a whine on load changes or a grinding first gear. Poppet balls, springs and shifter boots fatigue as well, leaving the shift action vague. Anyone replacing all wear parts while the case is open saves a second removal – and ends up with a gearbox good for another few decades.
What you will find in this category
- Bearings and shaft hardware: The input shaft bearing carries the main load under power and belongs in every rebuild – together with the mainshaft nut that keeps the bearing stack permanently preloaded.
- Gaskets and oil seals: The complete gasket and seal kit covers the rebuild in one go; individually you will also find the input shaft oil seal.
- Gears and synchronization: If first gear grinds, the first gear synchronizing hub is usually done; if reverse howls, take a close look at the reverse idler gear.
- Housing and transfer case interface: For serious damage the complete bell housing is available, and for a leak-free joint to the Dana 20 the matching adapter gasket.
- Shift linkage and small parts: A new shifter boot keeps water and dust out of the cabin, while the small parts repair kit restores springs, poppet balls and snap rings in a single step.
- Electrics on the gearbox: If the reverse lights stay dark, the culprit is often not the bulb but the back-up lamp switch on the shift cover.
Where the parts for your T18 come from.
The bulk of the range comes from Crown Automotive, a fixture of the American Jeep parts market for decades – from gasket kits and bearings right through to the transmission housing. For gears and synchronizer components we rely on Omix, whose gear-cutting quality lives up to classic US driveline engineering. The back-up lamp switch is supplied by Standard Ignition, a US specialist in sensors and switching contacts.
Torque specs, installation sequence, shipping times.
Not sure which parts actually belong together on your gearbox? We help with installation sequence, tightening torque for the mainshaft lock nut and telling the T18 apart from the later T150/T176 units – simply send us your model year and VIN. Your order leaves the warehouse in Germany as quickly as possible so your CJ7 does not sit on the lift longer than necessary.
