From Engine to Body – Your Complete Parts Range for Renegade, Laredo & Golden Eagle

The Jeep CJ5 (1972–1983) – the Last and Best-Selling CJ5 Generation.

In 1972, under AMC ownership, the CJ5 received its biggest update yet: a wider frame, the stronger Dana 30 front axle, and a switch from the older four-cylinder and Buick V6 engines to AMC's own inline-six 3.8L and 4.2L units plus the 5.0L V8. Special editions like Renegade, Golden Eagle, and Laredo turned the CJ5 into a lifestyle vehicle beyond pure utility work. The oil crisis of the late 1970s forced AMC toward more economical four-cylinder engines in 1980 – first the GM "Iron Duke," then AMC's own 2.5L from 1983 – paired with the tougher Dana 300 transfer case. Production ended in 1983 in favor of the CJ7. More than 40 years on, seals, bearings, rubber parts, and wiring on nearly every CJ5 72-83 need renewal – rust, vibration, and UV exposure take their toll on body, soft top, and drivetrain alike.
