T4 4-Speed Borg-Warner Transmission Parts Jeep CJ7
Shafts, synchro components and bearings for your four-speed (1982-1986).
What needs attention on a T4 from the final CJ years.
From 1982 the T4 took over from the SR4 in the CJ7 – closely related to the five-speed T5, with which it still shares many small parts. As a four-speed with an aluminium case it was designed around weight and fuel consumption rather than sustained load. On vehicles with four decades behind them the consequences are familiar: the blocking rings for third and fourth gear wear down, the plastic inserts on the shift forks turn brittle, and the front cluster gear bearing announces itself as a whine at idle that disappears when the clutch is pressed. At the same time the output seal leaks oil toward the transfer case – a slow process that drops the oil level and accelerates wear everywhere else. Since every wear item is available individually and as a kit, a T4 can be rebuilt properly rather than swapped for a used gearbox of unknown history.
What you will find in this category
- Gears and shafts: The cluster gear is available on its own or paired with third gear, alongside the 10-spline input shaft and the reverse idler gear.
- Synchronizers and shift forks: The blocking ring set for 3rd and 4th gear cures the crunch on upshifts, the shift fork insert brings back a precise throw – plus synchronizer plates, springs and locking pins.
- Bearings, retainers and spacers: The front cluster gear bearing removes the idle whine, the front bearing retainer locates the input shaft correctly; roller bearings, pilot bushing, spacer and thrust washers belong with them.
- Gaskets and oil seals: The input shaft oil seal seals toward the bell housing, the output shaft oil seal stops the loss toward the transfer case.
- Complete rebuild kits: The master overhaul kit covers a full rebuild, the transmission overhaul and repair kit a partial one; the small parts kit adds springs, pins and washers.
- Shift linkage, housing and clutch: The shifter boot keeps the cabin sealed, the bell housing replaces a damaged interface to the engine – plus shift knob kit, clips, rubber isolator, flywheel and complete clutch set.
Where the parts for your T4 come from.
The bulk of this category comes from Crown Automotive – synchro components, bearings, seals and complete overhaul kits whose part numbers stay consistent across the whole rebuild. Cluster gear, the cluster-and-third-gear package and the bell housing come from Omix. The flywheel with ring gear and the complete clutch set for the 2.5-litre AMC are supplied by Platinum Driveline, the back-up lamp switch by Standard Ignition – American suppliers throughout.
Torque specs, installation sequence, shipping times.
T4, T5 or still the SR4? Many small parts carry over between them, gears and shafts do not. We work out the correct gearbox with you from model year, engine and gear count, and advise on installation sequence, bearing retainer torques and what the overhaul kits actually contain. Just send us your VIN. Your order leaves the warehouse in Germany as quickly as possible.
