Why a decades-old CJ7 lets water into the footwell.
The CJ7 was an open design from day one: removable doors, a soft top or hardtop, and a fold-down windshield frame. Every one of these joints is sealed by rubber profiles alone. After decades of UV exposure, ozone, heat and frost, the material loses its elasticity. It hardens, shrinks and cracks. The results are drafts and wind noise, and above all water that quietly runs into the footwell and attacks the floor panels from the inside. The glass scrapers on the door window wear out too: they scratch the glass and let rain into the door. If you are restoring your CJ7 or simply want to drive it dry, treat the seals as a system and replace them together. For the right fit, it matters whether your full steel doors have a fixed or a movable vent window.
Doors, glass, hardtop: every CJ7 sealing joint covered
- Door seals for full and half doors: The perimeter door seal pair, right + left attaches to the door frame with retaining pins. Half doors from 1982 use their own profiles, such as the right half door seal.
- Window channels and glass scrapers: Channel rubbers keep the door glass free of play, and inner and outer scrapers wipe off the water, for example with the front window channel set, right + left or the outer scraper pair.
- Vent windows: Fixed vent windows from 1976 to 1981 take the vent window seal pair. For movable vent windows from 1982, you can even get the complete left vent window with glass and seal.
- Windshield, windshield frame and hood: This covers the windshield glass seal and the foam seal between body and windshield frame, plus the small hood-to-grille bumper grommet.
- Hardtop and tailgate: The hardtop seal kit with felt strips and sealant is complemented by seals for the rear and side glass and the lower tailgate seal.
