Engine Parts 5.0L 304 cui & 5.9L 360 cui V8 Jeep CJ7
Replacement parts for the AMC V8 304 and 360 cui (1976-1981) – crank train, valve train and engine mounting.
Why the AMC V8 in the Jeep CJ7 Needs Particular Attention Today.
The 304 cui was the most powerful engine the CJ7 ever left the factory with – a compact, lightweight V8 that gave the short wheelbase more temperament than the frame really appreciated. It disappeared from the price list with the 1982 model year, which makes sourcing parts harder today than for the sixes. The AMC V8 ages in predictable ways: the single-row timing chain stretches and lets valve timing drift, the nylon-toothed camshaft sprocket crumbles, rocker arms and valve guides wear, and the main bearings lose their clearance after decades. Add the heavy engine mounts that crack under the weight of the V8. Once the engine is open, tackle timing, bearings and valve train together – half measures come back quickly here.
From Timing Chain to Engine Mount: What This Category Holds
- Gaskets and gasket sets: Cylinder head gaskets separately for 304 and 360 cui, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, upper and lower sets plus the complete engine gasket set for a full rebuild.
- Valve train: Intake and exhaust valves with four grooves, valve seats, guides and stem seals, hydraulic lifters and rocker arms individually or as a set.
- Pistons, rings and bearing shells: Pistons in standard size for the 5.9L and .030" oversize, complete piston sets for the 5.0L, ring sets up to .060", rod bearings and crankshaft main bearings from standard to .030" oversize.
- Timing and crankshaft: The timing chain in standard and 1/2" versions, timing covers with gasket sets, the distributor gear repair kit, the camshaft with bearings, oil seals and harmonic balancers.
- Oil circuit: Oil pan, pump housing and repair kit, oil filter and drain plug, plus the oil pan gasket set and the dipstick with guide tube.
- Engine mounting and exhaust side: Motor mounts for left and right, upper mounting brackets, polyurethane and aluminium bushing sets, transmission mount and the exhaust manifold gasket for both displacements.
Eight Cylinders, Seven American Suppliers.
The backbone is Crown Automotive with gaskets, timing chains and oil pans, alongside Enginetech with gasket sets, piston sets and bearing shells. Sealed Power supplies pistons, camshaft, rocker arms and valves, Omix the valve covers, flywheel and engine brackets. Standard Ignition contributes the PCV valves, Dorman small parts, Daystar and Prothane the polyurethane engine mounts – all American manufacturers keeping the AMC V8 alive.
We Sort Out What Does Not Interchange Between 304 and 360 cui.
The two V8s share many bolt-on parts, but by no means all: head gaskets, pistons and rings differ by displacement, while rocker arms and timing chains are identical. Send us the model year and engine number and we will sort out what fits, give you torque figures for mains and cylinder head, and tell you which oversize you need after machining. Most items are in stock and go out to you at short notice.
