T5 Manual 5-Speed Borg-Warner Transmission Parts Jeep CJ7
Shafts, synchro components and bearings for your five-speed (1982-1986).
The fifth gear and what it asks of the gearbox.
With the T5 the CJ7 gained its first gearbox with a genuine overdrive from 1982 onwards: fifth gear drops engine speed noticeably on the open road and turns a loud off-roader into a vehicle you can live with every day. Mechanically the T5 is closely related to the four-speed T4 – same aluminium case, many identical small parts, but an extra gear pair and a longer main shaft assembly. That is exactly where the typical wear sits. The blocking ring for fifth gear works on every upshift at highway speed and wears accordingly; you notice it as a crunch, or as a gear that pops back out on its own. The rear cluster gear bearing announces itself as a whine at steady speed, and the output seal loses oil toward the transfer case. All of these parts are available individually and as kits, so a T5 can be rebuilt precisely where it needs it.
What you will find in this category
- Shafts and gears: The cluster gear with third gear comes as a complete assembly, alongside the 10-spline input shaft, third gear on its own and the reverse idler gear.
- Synchronizers and shift forks: The blocking ring set for 3rd, 4th and 5th gear covers the upper half of the gate, the set for 1st and 2nd gear the lower – plus synchronizer plates, springs, fork inserts and locking pins.
- Bearings, retainers and spacers: The front bearing retainer locates the input shaft, the rear cluster gear bearing removes the whine at steady speed; roller bearings, shifter sleeve, synchronizer retainer, spacer and thrust washers belong with them.
- Gaskets and oil seals: The input shaft oil seal seals toward the bell housing, the output shaft oil seal stops the oil loss toward the transfer case.
- Complete rebuild kits: The master overhaul kit contains bearings, oil seals, gaskets and small parts for a full rebuild, while the transmission overhaul and repair kit is enough for a partial one.
- Shift linkage, housing and clutch: The shift knob kit puts the shift area right again, both visually and functionally, and the bell housing replaces a damaged interface to the engine – plus shifter boots, clips, rubber isolator, flywheel and complete clutch set.
Where the parts for your T5 come from.
The bulk of this category comes from Crown Automotive – shafts, synchro components, bearings, seals and complete overhaul kits whose part numbers stay consistent across the entire rebuild. The bell housing is supplied by Omix, the flywheel with ring gear and the complete clutch set for the 2.5-litre AMC by Platinum Driveline, and the back-up lamp switch by Standard Ignition – American suppliers throughout.
Torque specs, installation sequence, shipping times.
T5 or T4? Both were fitted from 1982, share many small parts and look almost identical from the outside – the gear count and the cluster gear are what decide. We work out the right part with you from model year, engine and transmission code, and advise on installation sequence, bearing retainer torques and what the overhaul kits actually contain. Just send us your VIN. Your order leaves the warehouse in Germany as quickly as possible.
