From Axle to Soft Top – Every Component Group at a Glance
The Jeep CJ6 – the Stretched Sibling of the CJ5.
The CJ6 debuted in 1955 as the long-wheelbase version of the CJ5, offering considerably more cargo and seating room behind the front seats thanks to the extended wheelbase – ideal for agricultural and forestry use, camper conversions, or as a base for special-purpose builds. In the US it remained a niche model next to the more popular CJ5, while in many export markets it stayed in demand for decades. Technically it long shared its drivetrains with the CJ5: F-Head four-cylinder and Buick V6 engines in the early years, then from 1972 the more modern AMC six- and eight-cylinder engines with correspondingly updated axles and transfer cases. Anyone restoring or driving a CJ6 today benefits from exactly this technical closeness to the CJ5 – many parts are shared or directly interchangeable.
All Component Groups and Brands at a Glance
On the drivetrain side, Clutch covers release bearings and hardware. Transmission links to all six manual gearbox types – T86, T90, T98, T14, T15 and T18 – as does Transfer Case with the Dana 18 and Dana 20 series. On the engine side, Engine Parts leads to the three engine generations 2.2L, 3.8L & 4.2L and 5.0L & 5.9L. Alongside Crown Automotive, Enginetech and Sealed Power supply most internal engine parts, while Dana Spicer and Omix contribute transfer case components.
For the axles, Axle / Differential leads to the individual series Front Axle Dana 25, Front Axle Dana 27, Front Axle Dana 30, Rear Axle Dana 44 and Drive Shafts. Alongside these, Suspension and Steering keep the CJ6 road-ready. Dana Spicer supplies genuine axle components here, Prothane and Daystar bushings and suspension parts, Lares and Omix round out the steering hardware.
For safety, Brake Parts from Raybestos and Crown Automotive are on hand. Electric Parts covers ignition and lighting from Standard Ignition, Champion and German manufacturer Hella. Cooling, Fuel System and Exhaust Parts complete the drivetrain, including parts from Gates, Walker Exhaust and AP Exhaust.
For ongoing maintenance, Service provides wear parts, fluids and gaskets for regular inspections.
