Engine Parts Jeep CJ6

From Four-Cylinder to V8 (1955–1975)

Why the CJ6 Went Through Three Fundamentally Different Engine Generations.

Over its 20-year production run, the Jeep CJ6 was fitted with three fundamentally different engines: from 1955 to 1971 the modest 2.2-liter F-Head four-cylinder (134 cui), from 1972 onward the more powerful AMC six-cylinder displacing 3.8 and later 4.2 liters, and alongside it from 1972 the strong optional AMC V8 engines at 5.0 and 5.9 liters until production ended in 1975. Each engine generation brings its own typical wear points – from the F-Head's porous sealing system to stretched timing chains in the six-cylinder to worn-out main bearings in the V8. Which parts you need depends entirely on which of the three engines is fitted to your CJ6 – you'll find the right overview in the subcategories below.

  • 2.2L F-Head Four-Cylinder (1955–1971): Cylinder head gaskets, pistons, bearings and seals for the early 2.2L engine.
  • 3.8L & 4.2L Six-Cylinder (1972–1975): Timing chains, main bearings and valve train parts for the six-cylinder.
  • 5.0L & 5.9L V8 (1972–1975): Pistons, timing chains and motor mounts for the powerful V8 engine.
