Dana 20 Transfer Case
Gears, Output Bearings and Shift Components at a Glance (1972–1975).
The Beefier Transfer Case of the Later CJ6 Model Years.
Starting in 1972, Jeep switched the CJ6 to the Dana 20 transfer case, which brought a stronger gear set and an additional rear output bearing compared to the older Dana 18. Despite the tougher build, it's not immune to wear: the intermediate shaft with its gear and needle bearings wears down from constant power transfer, while the output bearings – both front and rear – develop play over the years and can cause vibration. Housing gaskets and seals harden and start leaking, letting gear oil escape. The shift mechanism with shift rod, poppet ball, and shift lever takes a beating from frequent switching between 2WD and 4WD. The propeller shaft yoke connecting to the Dana 30 or Dana 44 axle is also worth checking during major work, since it transfers power directly to the axle.
