Suspension Parts Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ WG
Shocks, Control Arms, Ball Joint & Sway Bar Parts for Stock and Lifted Builds (1999–2004)
Why the Quadra-Coil suspension on the Grand Cherokee WJ wears out at its arms and bushings
With the WJ, Jeep redesigned the rear suspension in 1999. Instead of the ZJ's track bar, a single upper A-arm with a ball joint above the differential now locates the axle, assisted by two lower control arms. Up front, the proven Quadra-Coil layout remains, with a solid axle, four control arms, a track bar and coil springs. The design is robust, but it relies on numerous rubber bushings – and those age. After two decades, the bushings crack and the ball joint in the upper A-arm wears, announcing itself with a clunk when pulling away or braking. Worn track bar and control arm bushings make straight-line stability vague. Tired shocks let the roughly two-ton WJ bounce and lengthen stopping distances. Renew these parts consistently and you get back a quiet, true-tracking suspension, whether at stock height or lifted.
From spring isolators to a complete control arm set
- Shocks for stock ride height: gas shocks front and rear as a pair or as a complete four-shock set with stock valving. Also available are polyurethane shock bushings and shock absorber boots that protect the piston rod from dirt and stone chips.
- Lift for more ground clearance: the complete 50 mm lift kit for the 3.1 TD and 2.7 CRD diesel models, plus matched shock sets for +50 mm or +75–100 mm.
- Springs, isolators & bump stops: a stock-height front coil spring for the 4.0 L and 4.7 L, coil spring isolators top and bottom, and bump stops against hard bottoming out.
- Control arms & bushings: upper and lower control arms individually, in premium versions or as a complete control arm set for front and rear axle. Matching front upper control arm bushings complete the range.
- Rear upper A-arm (control arm): the A-arm including ball joint as a complete solution or the ball joint on its own, plus the individual bushings.
- Sway bar & track bar: from the complete front sway bar kit with bushings, brackets and links, to individual links and PU sway bar bushings, through to the front track bar for the petrol models with its matching bushing.
Bilstein on the shocks, Dorman and Crown on the arms
Damping is handled by Bilstein with German engineering – B6 for stock height, B8 for lifted vehicles. The diesel lift kit comes from Trail Master by Maas in Germany. Control arms, ball joints, sway bar links and bushings are supplied by US specialists Dorman and Crown Automotive, complemented by arm components from Ridex and the stock spring from NTY. Polyurethane bushings and boots come from Prothane and Daystar in the USA.
Torquing the WJ's control arm bolts correctly – we'll advise you
Rubber-bushed control arms on the Grand Cherokee WJ are only tightened once the vehicle is back on its wheels. Otherwise the new bushings are preloaded and wear prematurely. We provide torque specs and the installation order, use your VIN to confirm which spring or track bar suits your engine, and help you choose the right shocks for stock height or a lift. Your order ships from stock in Germany as fast as possible.
