Service Parts Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ
Tune-Up Kits, Filters, Spark Plugs & Serpentine Belts (1999-2004).
Why the engine variant comes first when servicing a Grand Cherokee WJ
Few Jeeps were offered with as many powertrains as the Grand Cherokee WJ: the 4.0L inline six, the 4.7L V8, its more powerful H.O. version from 2002, plus the 3.1 TD and 2.7 CRD diesels. Each variant needs its own spark or glow plugs, its own filters and its own belt routing. Age adds to this: even the youngest WJ is now more than 20 years old. Serpentine belts turn brittle, oil and air filters clog, and the common-rail injection of the CRD is sensitive to water and dirt in the fuel. Often overlooked is the automatic transmission, whose filter should be replaced with every fluid change. Sticking to the intervals and matching every part exactly to engine and transmission keeps the WJ reliable on the road and prevents costly follow-up damage.
From cabin air filter to complete tune-up kit
- Tune-up kits: Ready-made packages combine spark plugs with oil, air and fuel filters, such as the tune-up kit for the 4.7L V8. The diesels get matching sets like the filter kit for the 3.1 TD, and further kits cover the 4.0L and the 2.7 CRD.
- Ignition and pre-glow: The spark plug set for the 4.7L with eight plugs, sets for the 4.7L H.O. and the 4.0L, plus the glow plug for the 2.7 CRD.
- Oil, air and cabin filters: The oil filter for the 4.0L and 4.7L petrol engines, oil filter cartridges for both diesels, air filters (including one specific to the 4.7L H.O.) and the cabin air filter for clean air inside the vehicle.
- Fuel filters: The fuel filter for the 4.0L and 4.7L and the diesel filter for the 2.7 CRD, complemented by the diesel filter for the 3.1 TD.
- Serpentine belts: The serpentine belt for the 4.0L with A/C and the belt for the 3.1 TD, plus versions for the 4.7L and the 2.7 CRD.
- Automatic transmission and sealing: The filter kit for 42RE, 44RE and 46RH, further kits for 545RFE/45RFE and NAG1, and the RTV silicone sealant for oil pan, valve cover and thermostat housing.
Crown, Champion, Ridex and ATP – who makes which service part for your WJ
Three of the four brands stand for American parts tradition: Crown Automotive supplies most of the range, from tune-up kits, filter kits, air and fuel filters and serpentine belts to a round transmission filter and the RTV sealant. The copper-core spark plug sets come from Champion, the automatic transmission filter kits with gasket from US specialist ATP. European manufacturer Ridex adds oil filters, diesel filters, the glow plug, the cabin air filter and the belt for the 3.1 TD.
