Engine and Body Electrics – from Crankshaft Sensor to Window Regulator (1999–2004)

Engine Management and Comfort Electrics: Two Areas That Age Differently on the WJ

On the Grand Cherokee WJ, almost everything depends on the electrics. Under the hood, the engine computer controls ignition and fuel injection based on the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, oxygen sensors and numerous temperature and pressure sensors. Starter and alternator take care of starting and system voltage. The body adds power windows, heated mirrors, headlights, tail lights and the airbag clockspring in the steering wheel. Both areas age in their own way: in the engine bay, heat and vibration wear down sensors and connectors, while on the body it is mechanical wear, UV light and moisture. A fault often shows up only as a warning light, a trouble code or a gradual loss of function. Pinning down the cause and replacing the right part keeps the WJ reliable and ready for everyday use.

From the Ignition Coil Under the Hood to the Tail Light at the Rear

  • Ignition, starting & charging: Ignition coils, spark plugs and glow plugs, starters and alternators as well as the ignition lock and keys are in the engine electrical section for the Grand Cherokee WJ.
  • Sensors & engine management: crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, oxygen sensors, throttle position and MAP sensors, temperature and oil pressure senders and the automatic transmission electrics – for the 4.0L, 4.7L V8 and 2.7 CRD.
  • Lighting & visibility: Headlights, fog lights, EU and US tail lights, bulbs and power-adjustable mirrors are in the body electrical section for the Grand Cherokee WJ.
  • Comfort & safety: window regulators with motor for all four doors, the airbag clockspring in the steering wheel and the brake light switch on the pedal.

Crown and Standard Ignition Supply Almost Three Quarters of the Range

Crown Automotive supplies starters, alternators, oxygen sensors, headlights, tail lights and power mirrors, and Standard Ignition the ignition coils and most of the sensors. Dorman contributes window regulators, radiator fans and the leak detection pump, and Champion the spark plugs. All four are US brands. The range is rounded off by Ridex and NTY from Europe as well as Hella and Alanko from Germany, for example for the rear fog light and the starter for the 4.7L.
