Steering Parts Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ WG
Power Steering Pumps, Gearboxes, Tie Rods & Knuckles for Precise Steering (1999–2004)
Why a Grand Cherokee WJ starts to wander after two decades
The Grand Cherokee WJ steers through a hydraulically assisted recirculating-ball gearbox that moves the right knuckle via pitman arm and drag link, while a tie rod connects both knuckles of the solid front axle. Every one of these joints works with each steering input and every pothole. After more than twenty years the effects are familiar: worn tie rod ends and ball joints create play, straight-line stability and steering precision fade, and on rough roads the front axle can start to shimmy. In the hydraulic circuit, engine heat hardens the hoses, seals on pump and gearbox begin to leak, and a whining pump points to low fluid or a failing bearing. On the 4.7L from 2001 and on the 2.7 CRD, the pump also feeds the hydraulic fan drive – a leak there affects steering and cooling at once.
Pumps matched to the engine, linkage matched to the side: WJ steering parts
- Gearbox: a remanufactured steering gearbox as an exchange unit or brand new, each for left-hand drive with power steering, plus the steering gear seal kit with housing part if only the upper seal is leaking.
- Pump & accessories: the remanufactured power steering pump for the 4.0L, versions for the 4.7L, 3.1 TD and with reservoir, plus the matching pump pulley, gasket set and reservoir cap.
- Hoses: the pressure hose for the 4.0L, the pressure hose for the 2.7 CRD to the fan drive, and pressure and return lines for the 4.7L.
- Complete kits: the tie rod assembly from knuckle to knuckle and the drag link assembly with both ends and adjusting sleeve – designed for stock ride height.
- Individual parts: tie rod ends upper and lower, left and right, tubes with clamps and the steering stabilizer against kickback.
- Knuckles: steering knuckles as a pair or individually, plus heavy-duty ball joints for the Dana 30 front axle – also with a lift and bigger tires.
Remanufactured by Cardone and Lares, new from Crown and Dorman
Nearly everything here comes from US manufacturers: remanufactured power steering pumps and the pulley from Cardone, the steering gearbox new or remanufactured and a new pump for the 4.7L from Lares. Crown Automotive supplies knuckles, complete kits, seal kits and the diesel pump, Dorman the premium tie rod ends and tubes. Add pressure hoses from Gates, heavy-duty ball joints from Dana Spicer and a tie rod end from Ridex as a budget alternative.
Engine and model year decide which pump and hose fit
For pumps and hoses in particular, fitment depends on the engine – 4.0L, 4.7L, 3.1 TD or 2.7 CRD – and on the model year, with a change between 2000 and 2002. Gearboxes and hoses are designed for left-hand drive. Send us your VIN: we check the match, provide torque specs for tie rod and drag link and explain how to bleed the system. After replacing linkage parts, we recommend a wheel alignment. Your order ships promptly from stock in Germany.
