Four engines, two fuel systems: where the Grand Cherokee WJ supply starts to fade
The Grand Cherokee WJ was built with two fundamentally different fuel systems: the 4.0L inline six and the 4.7L V8 draw fuel through an electric in-tank pump and deliver it via individual injectors, while the 3.1L turbo diesel (1999–2001) and the 2.7L CRD with common-rail injection (2002–2004) rely on their own diesel filter and line system. After more than twenty years, typical weak spots appear: a tired pump shows up as long cranking or loss of power under load, clogged injectors as a rough idle. On the CRD, the high-pressure pump is sensitive to dirt and water in the diesel, so filter changes belong firmly in the service schedule. Underneath the vehicle, road salt and spray attack the tank skid plate and the retaining straps. And a leaking gas cap or a faulty leak detection pump will switch on the check engine light.
From the in-tank pump to the evaporative system
- Fuel Delivery & Injection (4.0L): the electric in-tank fuel pump (1999–2004) and the fuel injector (from model year 2001), both for the inline six.
- Fuel Filters for Every Engine: the fuel filter for the 4.0L and 4.7L, the diesel filter for the 3.1L TD (1999–2001) and the diesel filter for the 2.7L CRD (2002–2004).
- Diesel Lines 2.7L CRD: the line from the diesel filter to the low-pressure pump and the line from the low-pressure pump to the high-pressure pump.
- Gas Caps by Model Year: for 1999–2000 the locking screw-on cap or the non-locking version, for 2001–2004 the newer locking gas cap or the non-locking gas cap.
- Tank Mounting & Underbody Protection: the two-piece tank strap set and the black-primed tank skid plate.
- Evaporative System (EVAP): the leak detection pump for the 4.0L and 4.7L (2002–2004).
Genuine Mopar lines for the CRD, US parts for tank and filters
Both diesel lines for the 2.7L CRD are genuine parts from Mopar. The fuel filter and three of the gas caps come from Crown Automotive, the skid plate, tank straps and leak detection pump from Dorman, and the locking cap for 2001–2004 from Gates – four brands with American roots. The diesel filters for the 3.1L TD and 2.7L CRD are made by European manufacturer Ridex.
