Axle & Differential Parts Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ WG
Dana 30 Front, Dana 35 or Dana 44 Rear and the Drive Shafts (1999–2004)
Why Axles and Driveshafts on the Grand Cherokee WJ Work as One System
The Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ sends its power through a transfer case to two driveshafts and two solid axles. Depending on equipment, that is an NP242 or an NP247. Up front, a Dana 30 works with outboard constant-velocity joints and bolt-on hub assemblies. At the rear, depending on equipment, there is a Dana 35 or the stronger Dana 44 with a 226 mm ring gear, optionally with a Trac-Lok or Vari-Lok limited-slip. After more than twenty years, the typical weak spots appear: brittle axle boots, worn ball joints, whining pinion and side bearings, slipping clutch discs in the limited-slip and worn U-joints. Because all components are linked through torque, gearing and bearings, it pays to look at the whole system. Anyone replacing a pinion bearing should check shims, pinion yoke and U-joint at the same time.
Four Assemblies from Wheel Hub to U-Joint
- Front axle: For the Dana 30 front axle you will find steering knuckles, ball joints, complete hub assemblies, CV boots, spider gear sets and pinion bearings.
- Dana 35 rear axle: The Dana 35 rear axle range covers open and Trac-Lok differentials, clutch discs, shims and the pinion yoke.
- Dana 44 rear axle: For the Dana 44 rear axle you will find side bearings, pinion shims in two thicknesses, retaining rings and the cover gasket.
- Driveshafts: The drive shaft section offers 82 × 27 mm U-joints, the U-joint strap kit and boots for front and rear shafts.
Dana Spicer, Crown and Dorman Share the WJ Driveline
