Why the 2.5L GM Engine in the Jeep CJ5 Needs Its Own Parts.

From 1980 to 1983, Jeep offered the CJ5 with an optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine from General Motors – nicknamed the "Iron Duke" – as an alternative to the AMC four-cylinder of the same displacement. While both engines share the same displacement class, they differ significantly in design: the GM engine requires its own oil filter with a different thread size, its own engine gasket sets, and its own engine mounts. After more than forty years, engine and transmission mounts wear out as the rubber ages, the clutch pilot bearing wears from friction against the crankshaft, and gasket sets harden and become porous. The rubber bushings and studs of the Dana 300 transmission insulator also wear over time, leading to noticeable driveline vibration. Anyone restoring their CJ5 with the GM engine or driving it off-road should check these often-overlooked wear parts.

American Brand Quality for the GM Engine.

Pilot bearing, oil filter, engine and transmission mounts, and the Dana 300 transmission insulator come from Crown Automotive – a name that stands for American engineering expertise in Jeep parts. The engine gasket set comes from Rugged Ridge, a brand of Omix, also of American origin.
