Why the Jeep CJ5 Went Through Two Different Transfer Case Generations.

Over the Jeep CJ5's full production run from 1972 to 1983, two different transfer cases were used: through 1979, Jeep fitted the Dana 20, a proven but comparatively light-duty unit with a chain drive to the front axle. Starting in 1980, the significantly more rugged Dana 300 with its straight-cut gear set replaced the Dana 20 and remained in service until production ended in 1983 – at the time it was considered one of the most durable transfer cases available and was later even used in military applications. Both generations experience typical wear over the years: gears and bearings wear from constant power transfer, seals and housing gaskets harden and start leaking, while shifter boots, knobs, and linkage age from vibration and UV exposure. Since the Dana 20 and Dana 300 look similar but are mechanically quite different, correctly identifying your model year is essential for choosing the right parts.
