T4 Manual 4-Speed Borg-Warner Transmission Parts for Jeep CJ5
Shafts, Gears, Bearings & Seals for Reliable Shifting (1982–1983).
Why the T4 Transmission in the Jeep CJ5 Wears Out After Decades.
The Borg-Warner T4 was the standard 4-speed transmission in the Jeep CJ5 for 1982 and 1983 – alongside the mechanically identical overdrive-equipped T5 – reliably transferring power from the 2.5-liter engines of these final CJ5 years to the drivetrain. After decades of service, though, typical wear shows up: 3rd and 4th gear synchronizer rings wear thin from friction and cause notchy shifting, while input and output shaft bearings develop play from sustained load. Oil seals harden and start leaking, letting gear oil escape. Shift forks and the shifter boot wear mechanically, spacers and bushings lose their fit from vibration, and under heavy use the housing bell can develop cracks. Anyone running a T4 off-road or on larger tires should check these wear parts regularly to avoid costly follow-on damage to shafts and gears.
- Shafts & Gears: The input shaft and the cluster gear with 3rd gear form the mechanical heart of the transmission.
- Synchronizers & Shift Forks: The 3rd and 4th gear synchronizer set and the shift fork insert keep shifting precise.
- Bearings & Seals: The front bearing retainer and the rear cluster gear bearing prevent play and premature wear.
- Repair Kits & Small Parts: The master overhaul kit and the small parts repair kit cover a complete rebuild.
- Shifting, Controls & Switch: The shifter boot and the reverse gear switch ensure reliable shifting and accurate signaling.
- Housing, Clutch & Transfer Case Connection: The housing bell, the complete clutch master kit and the flywheel and ring gear assembly round out the range.
