Between 1972 and 1983, Jeep offered the CJ5 with a remarkable range of engine options. At the start of production, buyers could choose between the proven AMC six-cylinder in 3.8-liter or 4.2-liter displacement and the powerful AMC V8 in 5.0-liter or 5.9-liter form – the latter was dropped from the lineup in 1981 for weight and fuel economy reasons. In 1980, GM added a more economical alternative with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder, nicknamed the "Iron Duke." In the final model year, 1983, AMC's own 2.5-liter four-cylinder joined the lineup as well. This variety means the exact engine should be confirmed by displacement, cylinder count, or VIN before ordering parts, since pistons, gaskets, and bearings differ by engine.
