Drive Shaft Parts Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ WG
U-Joints, Strap Kit & Boots for Front and Rear Shafts (1999–2004)
Why U-Joints and Boots Are the First to Go on the WJ Driveline
The driveshafts of the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ carry power from the transfer case to both axles. Depending on the 4WD system, that is an NP242 (Selec-Trac) or an NP247 (Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive). On the front shaft in particular, the design depends on the engine: the U-joint and boot in this category fit there on the 4.7-liter V8. U-joints wear out from lack of lubrication, moisture and load changes. Typical signs are a metallic clunk when pulling away, vibration at higher speeds and squeaking when maneuvering. Cracked boots on the slip yoke let dirt and water reach the splines and joint. Loose U-joint straps pull the shaft out of alignment and cause imbalance. Replacing these parts in time protects the seals and bearings of the transfer case and axles from follow-up damage.
From a Single U-Joint to the Rear Axle Pinion Yoke
- U-joints 82 × 27 mm: The greasable U-joint fits the rear joint of the rear shaft and the front shaft on the 4.7-liter from 2001. It is also available as a more affordable version. The maintenance-free heavy-duty U-joint needs no grease fitting.
- Fastening: The U-joint strap kit with hex bolts secures the U-joint to the rear axle yoke.
- Pinion yoke: The pinion yoke with 26 splines fits the Dana 35 rear axle.
- Boots: The transfer case boot protects the rear shaft on the NP242. The boot kit with clamps is designed for the 4.7-liter's front driveshaft.
Spicer Joints and Crown Parts for Your WJ's Driveshafts
The U-joints and strap kit come from Dana Spicer, a name that has stood for automotive U-joints for more than a hundred years. Crown Automotive supplies the Dana 35 pinion yoke and the transfer case boot. Both brands bring American driveline engineering to your WJ, matched to the original joint dimensions.
