Dana 44 Rear Axle Parts Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ WG
Side Bearings, Pinion Shims & Cover Gasket for the 226 mm Differential (1999–2004)
Why the WJ's Dana 44 Handles More and Still Needs Care
The Dana 44 is the stronger of the two Dana rear axles in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. Among other applications, it was fitted together with the Quadra-Drive 4WD system and the Vari-Lok limited-slip differential. Its ring gear measures 226 mm, hence the factory designation D226. This makes it considerably sturdier than the Dana 35 and better suited to towing and off-road use. As on the Dana 35, the axle shafts are held in the tubes by pressed-on wheel bearings with retaining rings. After more than twenty years, the differential side bearings in particular show wear. Play in the carrier changes the backlash, the ring gear starts to whine, and in the worst case the teeth suffer. When replacing bearings, the right pinion shim determines gear pattern and smooth running. Leaking cover gaskets let oil escape, and oil starvation quickly damages any limited-slip differential.
From Cover Gasket to Complete Side Bearing Set
- Differential side bearings: The side bearing set renews both sides at once. Alternatively, the bearing is available individually for the inner and outer position, each with its cup.
- Pinion shims: Choose from the 0.89–0.99 mm set and the 1.02–1.12 mm set. The latter comes as an OE-grade version or as a budget-friendly alternative.
- Axle shaft & wheel: The wheel bearing retaining ring secures the axle shaft, and the wheel studs hold the wheel on the hub.
- Driveshaft: The U-joint strap kit secures the rear driveshaft's U-joint to the axle yoke.
- Cover & oil: The differential cover gasket keeps the housing sealed. The limited-slip additive keeps it running smoothly.
Bearings from the Axle's Maker, Shims in Two Price Tiers
Side bearings, retaining ring, U-joint strap kit, the OE-grade 1.02–1.12 mm shim set and the additive come from Dana Spicer, the maker of the axle itself. Crown Automotive supplies the 0.89–0.99 mm set, the more affordable 1.02–1.12 mm version and the cover gasket. The wheel studs come from Dorman. US parts throughout, matched to the WJ rear axle.
