5.0L & 5.9L 8-Cylinder Jeep CJ6
Timing Chain, Pistons & Cylinder Head for the V8 (1972–1975).
Why the AMC V8 Needs Special Care After Decades of Service.
Starting in 1972, AMC offered the Jeep CJ6 with powerful V8 engines displacing 5.0L (304 cui) and 5.9L (360 cui) in addition to the six-cylinder – the strongest available powertrain until production ended in 1975. After decades of service, these V8 engines show typical signs of age: timing chains stretch and let camshaft timing drift, valve seats and guides wear from heat, and cylinder head and intake manifold gaskets become porous. Main and rod bearings lose clearance from oil sludge, piston rings let compression and oil pass through the cylinder wall, and rubber or polyurethane motor mounts crack or harden, causing noticeable vibration. Oil pan, oil pump and their gaskets suffer from age as well. Anyone fully overhauling their V8 or checking for oil loss and rough running will need to replace these classic wear parts.
- Cylinder Head & Valve Train: The valve seat for intake valves and the intake manifold gasket set for tight-sealing joints.
- Timing Chain, Distributor & Camshaft: The complete timing chain and the standard-size camshaft bearing set.
- Crankshaft, Rods & Bearings: The connecting rod bearing complete set and the standard-size main bearing set.
- Pistons & Piston Rings: The standard-size piston set along with the matching piston ring set for the 5.9L.
- Motor Mounts, Gasket Sets & Manifold: The polyurethane motor mount pair and the lower engine gasket set for the bottom-end overhaul.
- Oil, Cooling & Hardware: The oil pump cover and the oil pan gasket set for a tight-sealing oil pan.
Nine American Brands for the Classic AMC V8.
The bulk of the range – gaskets, timing chain components, oil pan parts and crankshaft seals – comes from Crown Automotive. Enginetech adds camshaft bearings, oversize main bearings, piston rings, complete piston sets and freeze plug sets, while Sealed Power contributes valve seats, rod bearings, 5.9L pistons and rocker arms. Valve covers, the flywheel and upper motor mounts come from Omix, with a heater hose and PCV grommet supplied additionally by Dorman. Polyurethane motor mounts are available from both Prothane and Daystar, and the PCV valve comes from Standard Ignition. Nine American brands that together stand for proven US engineering in the classic V8.
