Why the Dana 300 Transfer Case in the Jeep CJ5 Wears Out Over the Years.
The Dana 300 transfer case replaced the weaker Dana 20 in the Jeep CJ5 in 1980 and remained in use until production ended in 1983. With its straight-cut gear set instead of a chain, it was considered significantly more rugged and was later even used in military vehicles. Still, this transfer case isn't immune to wear: the input and output shaft gears and bearings wear from constant power transfer, while seals and housing gaskets harden with age and start leaking. The shifter boot cracks from vibration and UV exposure, the shift knob loosens, and the shift linkage bushings wear, leading to imprecise gear selection. Transmission mount bushings and bolts also fatigue over time, letting the transfer case run rough. Regularly checking oil level, noise, and leaks protects axles and driveshafts from follow-on damage and keeps your CJ5's off-road capability intact.
