Steering Parts for Jeep CJ5
Tie Rod Ends, Steering Box & Steering Stabilizers for Precise Handling (1955–1971).
Why the Steering System in the Jeep CJ5 55-71 Wears Out Over the Decades.
The steering system of the Jeep CJ5 55-71 relies on a mechanical worm-and-sector gearbox that transmits force to the front axle through the drag link and tie rods – a robust but maintenance-heavy design. After decades of use, tie rod ends and ball joints wear from constant motion, creating play and an imprecise steering feel. Inside the steering box, the sector shaft and bushings wear down, and gaskets turn brittle and start leaking oil. The drag link and bellcrank develop noticeable play over the years, while the steering stabilizer loses effectiveness and steering shimmy increases – especially noticeable with larger tires or off-road driving. The steering wheel itself can also become brittle from UV exposure and material fatigue. Anyone driving off-road or running larger tires should inspect the entire steering system especially regularly – safety and driving comfort are the top priority here.
- Tie Rod Ends & Drag Link End: Tie rod end right or left in original design or as a replacement version, complemented by the combined tie rod end lower or upper for the pitman arm and tie rod.
- Steering Box & Sector Shaft: The sector shaft repair set renews the shaft, gasket and seal, the matching sector shaft bushing sits on the outside of the housing, plus the steering gearbox side cover gasket and the adjustment shim set for the worm gearbox ball bearings.
- Steering Shaft & Connecting Rod: The steering bellcrank repair set and the steering connecting rod repair set eliminate play between the pitman arm and bellcrank.
- Steering Stabilizer: The standard steering stabilizer replaces the original part 1:1, the reinforced ORV steering stabilizer further reduces steering shimmy for off-road use and larger tires.
- Steering Wheel: The steering wheel without horn button in original design completes the range.
American Brand Expertise for Your Steering System.
Most of the range comes from Crown Automotive – from tie rod ends to steering stabilizers and the steering wheel – American engineering that shows in every part. Alternative tie rod ends and the combined tie rod end come from Dorman, while the reinforced steering stabilizer and the connecting rod repair set are supplied by Omix – both American manufacturers with long-standing experience in Jeep parts.
