Transmission Parts for Jeep CJ5
All Gearbox Variants from T86 to T18 at a Glance (1955–1975)
Why the Jeep CJ5 Was Fitted with Different Transmissions Over the Years.
The Jeep CJ5 was fitted with different transmissions over its two-decade production run, depending on model year and drivetrain. In earlier years, the proven T90 served as the standard 3-speed gearbox, briefly supplemented by the rare T86. From the mid-1960s onward, the more compact T14 and T15 followed as modern 3-speed successors, while the rugged 4-speed T98 and T18 handled higher torque demands. All variants suffer similar wear after decades of use: leaking seals and gaskets, worn-out bearings, loose nuts, and worn shift mechanism parts. Which transmission is fitted to your CJ5 depends on the exact model year – you'll find the matching parts in the relevant subcategory.
- 3-Speed Transmissions: The T90 transmission, T14 transmission and T15 transmission were the standard 3-speed variants across the different CJ5 model years.
- 4-Speed Transmissions: The T98 transmission and T18 transmission offered four gear ratios for more demanding use.
- Rare Transition Model: The T86 transmission was only fitted briefly in 1966/67 and is correspondingly rare.
