Starting in 1972, Jeep switched the CJ6 to the wider, sturdier Dana 30 as its front axle – the same axle also used in the CJ5, CJ7, and CJ8. Unlike the earlier Dana 25/27 axles, the Dana 30 uses ball joints instead of king pins, allowing more steering angle but also introducing its own wear points. Over time, moisture and vibration take their toll on the U-joints, ball joints, and the ring-and-pinion set inside the differential – steering play, a rough-running pinion, or oil leaking at the differential cover are typical signs.
